Here are some methods that can be used to help start the creative process:
One of the ways in which creative thinkers stand out from the crowd is that they can see more than one meaning in one word or idea. It's a bit like looking at an optical illusion and working out what is happening.
Can you deliberately trick your mind, or invent your own brainteaser? There are many things that happen which are a complete surprise to us. See if you can create a story that starts with someone encountering the unexpected just around a corner. What would be the most unexpected encounter you could imagine? There can be more than one answer to a question, but reverse the process and what do you get? How many questions can you think up for the answer – three elephants?
Lots of jokes, riddles and comedy rely on words and phrases with more than one meaning; they play on words. Can you think of some examples?
What sits in the corner but goes around the world? A stamp.
Listen and look for other examples, and make a note of your favourites – you could start your own personal joke book.
