Derby and Derbyshire Schools 2010

Murray Park School, Derby

Murray Park School explored the theme of energy and the Year 9s ran a series of fun activities for two visiting primary schools. The year 5 & 6 pupils were treated to a variety of hands-on activities involving catapults, coke and mentos explosions and a science themed drama production.

Glossopdale School, Glossop

Team of students were challenged to build bridges from island to island in an activity called ‘Bridging the Gap’ which had been developed alongside Karen Donnelly-Bale and Dr Nicholas Stevens at the Materials Dept of Manchester University and the artist, Steve Pool. The activities creatively incorporated materials science, engineering as well as considering economic and environmental factors. The collaboration is due to continue further over the next academic year!

Bolsover School, Bolsover

Year 9 pupils worked alongside Dr Adrian Shaw and Martin Blackham (Creative Forum) and created science-based activities including filmed practicals, games and drama productions for primary schools. The young people really shone in their lead roles and delivered the activities to two feeder primary schools.

Tupton Hall School, Chesterfield

The incredible ‘10 Hour Energy Marathon’ took place on 19th March which tested the stamina of all involved! Pupils, parents and teachers pedalled on bikes to generate electricity in order to continuously power a stage on which a variety of budding bands were playing throughout the day. Primary school pupils and parents visited throughout the day (and night!) and had great fun whilst learning about science. Alongside the main event, a kinetic sculpture was also developed with the primary schools working with practitioners, Frazer Johnston and Steve Pool.
