Leicestershire Schools 2010

Loughborough College

Loughborough College engineering students worked with Chloe Hampson from Barn Door Theatre Company to develop a drama workshop which was taken into primary schools. The workshop explored the science behind a gravity racer – friction, steering, resistance etc, as well as the aesthetic and decorative elements. STEM advisors from Limehurst School were also on hand to support the activities and together a fantastic film was produced documenting the workshop experience.

Robert Smyth School, Market Harborough

A fantastic collaboration took place between the Robert Smyth students and teachers and Sam Illingworth and Dr Catherine Muller from University of Leicester. Together they created a DVD on climate change which involved 8 Skits which were all planned, performed and filmed by the students. Follow on workshops in Primary Schools were also planned to take place led by the Year 10 students. The school have even been developing a website with the art department to showcase their activities.

Wreake Valley Community College, Syston

Wreake Valley explored the ‘Earth’ theme in relation to the developing world and the Year 8s collaborated in small groups to develop creative solutions to water shortages. Creative practitioner Liz Anelli and Dr Upul Wijayantha from Loughborough University were collaborating partners with the school.

Ivanhoe College, Ashby de la Zouch

An impressive 3 days worth of activities led by the Year 9s involving 12 feeder primary schools took place during NSEW. Climate change was the focus of the week and the Year 9s ran 6 different games and challenges. Dr Seong-hee Kim from CELS and Mark Walton from Hands on Science, built on their Ivanhoe collaboration the previous year with great success.

Ibstock Community College, Ibstock

The theme of Ibstock’s CAWS was ‘Earth’ and together with artist Steffie Richards and Su Parker from Scientific Reactions they designed four activities around space travel, natural disasters, human life and The Big Bang. The activities were led by groups of Year 8s and they were visited by their feeder primary schools.

De Lisle Catholic Science College, Loughborough

The De Lisle team took their climate change inspired production on tour to 5 Primary Schools across Loughborough. Following each performance the students also delivered 5 interactive activities which taught STEM themes to the younger primary pupils in a very entertaining way. De Lisle collaborated with Nathan Human from Citizen 598 and scientists from the Botanic Gardens in Leicester.
