A Cracking Day - Invent! 09

Neon-coloured brains, gigantic plants, and a whole host of other crazy activities filled the day at this year's Invent! competition! Read on to find out who invented what, and who won the grand prize of a trip to the new 'Cracking Ideas' exhibition at the Science Museum!

The day itself . . .

Pupils attending Invent! 09 had a choice of 5 workshops to participate in; The Bridge Business, Wonderful and  Curious Things, Sci-Cast, Plants of the Future and Build-a-Brain! Led by brilliant and enthusiastic workshop leaders, and assisted by some great workshop helpers, workshop activities ranged from creating a science film, to making huge surreal plants from chicken wire and mod-rock, to actually building a brain from air dough, and more!

Following a morning of wacky workshops, everyone had a break for lunch, and then the invention demonstrations began, some outside, some inside, some successful, other not, but each invention was very well presented by their team, with thorough explanations if the demonstration was not quite as planned!

Judges Gareth Jones, from TV programmes, such as How 2, Emily Cummins, our very own Creative Spark, Nicola Jenkins from the Intellectual Property Office (and also the generous donor of the Winning trip to the Wallace and Gromit exhibition!), and Sam Houghton, the youngest Patent holder, (who co-indentally celebrated his 7th birthday on the day of Invent!) had a hard task of choosing a winner, but eventually, it was revealed, and the day ended with a cake for Sam, and the prize giving ceremony.

The Winners!

Congratulation to Keyworth Primary School, who are this years winners!

Choosing to tackle 'A problem solved', the pupils from Keyworth Primary invented an ingenius way to refill their school pond, using rain water from the school roof, in order to save their tadpoles! Not only did they effectively solve the problem, they also gave an exceptional presentation to the judges, and all their hard work and efforts paid off!

There were three other prizes up for grabs; best primary entry, best secondary entry, and the invention last years winners (from Newbridge High School) thought was best. The winners are as follows:

Best Primary Entry - Dovecote Primary School, for their brilliant 'pop a balloon with a flick' invention.

Best Secondary Entry - Daniel Atherton, from Emmanuel School, for his revolutionary rocket powered aerial camera.

Last years winners favorite - Ivanhoe College, for their extraordinary new age vehicles!
