Invent! 08

The first Invent! competition and workshop day was held at Snibston Discovery Park in Coalville on 8 July as part of National SHINE week. 120 students from across the region took part in 10 workshops on the day all designed to build their confidence in creativity and invention.

The teams had also prepared with their inventions which were judged by a distinguished panel including 5 (now 6) year old Sam Houghton, the youngest holder of a UK patent for his unique brush invention.

Winners of a grand engineering day out in London were the students of Newbridge High School in Coalville for their chain reaction machine. A report of their visit to the lab of materials scientist, Dr Mark Miodownik, can be found at Grand Engineering Day Out Report

Second prize of a projector microscope went to the students of Sherwood Hall School in Mansfield Woodhouse for their orchestra of invented scrap instruments.

Invent! 09 will be launched during National Science and Engineering week in March, when the challenges for invention will include a new chain reaction machine, and a green vehicle. The judges are dreaming up further fiendish challenges to challenge the ingenuity and imagination of the region's young inventors.
