Scientist in Residence (Short Term Contract)
As part of Ignite!’s development of Lab_13 International, a network of labs in schools run by children, we are seeking a Scientist in Residence for Lab_13 Koli, a village school in North Karelia, Finland. This is a short contract of 3 weeks to work with the school and the Koli National Park visitors centre.
Lab_13 is a space where children not only learn science, but learn how to be scientists; it is a space, usually in primary schools, that pupils manage for their own experiments and investigations, prompted by their imagination, creativity and curiosity, and guided by a Scientist (or engineer, or inventor) in Residence. Outcomes include increased confidence in designing their own programmes of learning, in communication skills, and in attainment across other subjects. Plus increased confidence in other teachers (especially for science).
More information about the day to day running of Lab_13s can be found on the Lab_13 Blog.
In Koli you will be working with the school population of 22 pupils, aged 7 to 15, to create a space for research and experiment; and with the National Park visitors’ centre to provide a community resource (a Community Curiosity Lab).
There will also be an opportunity to work with the Koli village Artist in Residence, and of course to observe the much praised Finnish education system at first hand.
We are looking for your three weeks availability between 14 August and 10 September. Flights, accommodation and a per diem will be paid.
Deadline for applications: Monday 22nd May, 5pm (BST)
