Ivanhoe College

With an estimated 270 students involved, it is clear that Ivanhoe College really leapt into the spirit of Come alive with Science! Over three days, primary school children were invited into workshops, which involved 6 different science games, devised by year 9 students, all with a different theme. Scientist Mark Walton was on hand for any science issues (!), and Seonghee Kim provided the creative element. The event was photographed, and even reported on by a STEM journalist!

Babington Community College

Creative practitioners Miram Keye and Nikki Pugh worked with 21 Year 8 girls who were identified by their teachers as lacking enthusiasm in science and school in general. Working with the Babington staff, Miriam and Nikki designed a student-led brief to explore ways of engaging the participants with science lessons whilst working towards an event that would place them in a position of having to teach science to others.

As a group, they planned a science fair for friends and family. Working with role play, dance and hands-on science challenges, the pupils investigated what makes science come alive for them and how that knowledge could be used to make their audience go "wow!". Their journey is documented on the project blog.

Wreake Valley College

English Martyrs School

This Come Alive with Science project is ongoing. English Martyrs School began their activities by visiting botanical gardens to investigate nature’s patterns, including the Fibonacci sequence. Primary school children from Bishop Ellis, Christ the King, Holy Cross and St Patricks School all took part in this activity, and sculptures created from the ongoing project are going to be exhibited at the Botanical Gardens in the School Arts Festival. Rachel Barnett was the school’s creative practitioner, assisting with over 250 students. Some of these children were interviewed by a local radio station, spreading the word of Come Alive with Science!

Garendon High School

Robert Smyth School

At Robert Smyth School, all subjects got involved in Come Alive with Science! From IT classes researching science websites, to Drama students producing planets, to English groups debating about the declassification of Pluto, all aspects of school life were taken over during Science and Engineering week.

Alongside all these activities, a competition was run for primary school children from Welland Park and Kibworth High School to see who could create the best creature, not from Planet Earth, made out of junk, and a mural project was undertaken, with Robert Smyth students acting as project managers for the primary students. Assemblies all week were science themed, and Liz Anelli(creative practitioner) was joined by a botanic garden scientist to offer support and guidance for the students.
