Launch day for the first Lab 13!

The Lab is launched!

And what a success it was! With a variety of guests present, ranging from reporters, to families of the Management team, to representatives from emda and also Iain Colquhoun from the original Room 13, the launch day kicked off with an introduction from the Management Team, welcoming visitors and explaining their roles individually. This introduction set the tone for the day, creating a nice balance between an official opening, and also a relaxed atmosphere that made it clear that the day was about the children of Lab 13.

After some brief words by the school head teacher, Andy Jenkins, the Chair of governors, Andrew Morgan from emda and Rick Hall from Ignition*, Creative Spark Emily Cummins offered some inspirational words, and handed the stage over to the demonstrations. We were wowed by some chemical whizzery from Sam Tang from the University of Nottingham, who demonstrated all kinds of crazy experiments, including shooting a plastic tube across the hall using just dry ice! Following Sam was the team from Ericsson, with their companion Robodog! Whilst the team explained the engineering required, Robodog was set loose, whizzing around following lines of tape on the floor. The final show was the Management Team’s amazing fizzing, glittering volcano, which erupted and was met with applause from everyone in the room.

Once the formalities were over, guests were invited in groups to visit the newly opened lab. The kids spoke enthusiastically about what they hoped to be doing in the lab, and showed us their Chain Reaction machine, which ended with a Lab 13 logo being flipped over. There is clearly a lot of excitement surrounding the lab, not only from the children who will be running it, but from their teacher Tracey Barton, and the newly appointed Scientist in Residence Emma Dowsett, who will help the children explore their creative ideas and try out new experiments.

The launch day was a real success, and all the months of hard work and long hours have clearly paid off; the first ever Lab 13 is off to a great start.
