Mushroom Madness

Children taking the mycelium out of their moulds

Mushroom Madness was a project engaging young people in social action through environmental science

Supported by a grant from the #IWILL fund, we worked with a group of 20 young people from the Ridge Youth and Play Centre. Over a series of sessions designed to draw out suggestions from the young people about what they'd like to change and do in their environment, the young people decided that they were interested in exploring natural building materials. Working with environmental biologist Mo Langmuir, the young people grew their own mycelium and used it to build a model of their youth centre out of mycelium.

At the end of the project, the young people all received Bronze Crest awards.

The young people worked with video-maker Isabelle Halliday to create five videos documenting the investigation. The first video is on this page, and the rest are all available on our Vimeo Channel
