Project exploring the scientific and social implications of settling on Mars

Our City on Mars was a year-long project funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council, working with year 6 pupils from four Bulwell Primary Schools. Working with staff and students from Nottingham Trent University's Physics department, and creative practitioner Rachel Scanlon, pupils learnt about preparations for long-distance space travel, the journey itself, landing and creating a settlement on Mars.

The project was delivered in the context of the coronavirus pandemic, and harnessed the children's experiences of isolation, boredom and confinement, as well as exploring issues of health, wellbeing and how we live together.

The pupils' creative expressions of Our City On Mars were exhibited at Bulwell Riverside Library in July 2021 as part of the Bulwell Arts Festival.
