Open Call for Workshop Participants

Augmented Reality and Conservation

Artist Ryan Heath, Ignite! and BACKLIT Gallery are looking for 6 young people to take part in a series of four online workshops exploring creativity, conservation, and tech. These sessions are for those aged 16 – 25 currently based in Nottinghamshire. Together, we’ll be exploring if 'augmented reality' (AR) can be used to further conservation efforts.

We will be working on some interactive, digital signage - using Attenborough Nature Reserve as inspiration. These virtual signs will aim to encourage best practices and inform visitors to the reserve. These will be prototypes, not finished works.

The prototypes we develop will be showcased as artwork for the Nottingham Festival of Science and Curiosity in February 2021. No prior experience of augmented reality tech is required, although some understanding of how to use a laptop in the basic sense will help - and a willingness to learn and collaborate with others.

This project is kindly supported by Arts Council England.

In these workshops, you will:

  • Merge digital media with environmental conservation.

  • Have the option to showcase your work at the Nottingham Festival of Science and Curiosity

  • Collaborate with peers in a supportive environment

  • Design a sculpture for augmented reality

  • Experiment with new software

  • Prototype your design
